Using Crubit for external C++ projects outside Chrome

Hi Crubit team,

I am very interested in using Crubit for a project outside of Chrome. I understand that Crubit was primarily developed for internal use and deep integration with your build systems.

I wanted to ask if it is possible to use Crubit locally for other C++ projects that are not part of the Chrome codebase. Is running it even possible outside chrome? Are there any limitations or considerations I should be aware of when attempting this?

We have plans to expand our open source integrations in '26, but nothing concrete we can share yet. If that does pan out, it will include integrations outside of chrome builds (at least a bazel integration but we'd like to do more). However, we can't commit to anything at the moment as we have some open problems to solve before we can onboard other build systems.

I appreciate and share your interest in using Crubit in other C++ projects!

Are there any concrete plans in cubit being usable via build.rs/standalone crate in the future? If yes, can you give a time plan for that? I think using bazel is not a viable solution for a lot of rust crates that just want to depend on a c++ dependency..

We don't have concrete plans right now, but I can confirm bazel will not be our only build integration option. In the other direction, C++ calling Rust, we offer an OSS cmake integration today: https://crubit.rs/overview/build_systems.html#cmake.

I expect a similar setup for Rust calling C++, but it's not yet clear if that will be a cargo-based solution, cmake-based solution, or something else. I would expect something usable on that front in 2027 at the earliest.
