Claude Cowork support

As there is no Internet-available MCP, I could not find a decent way to run this in Claude Cowork, neither local one (that uses isolated VMs), nor the cloud one. For now the only way seems to be to use it via local Claude Code session, but it would be so much nicer to also access Hey via iOS Claude app for example.

There is a way to reach hey from a Claude Cowork cloud session today, without a hosted MCP. Verified end to end this morning, so posting it in case it saves you the hunt.

The trick is which registry you put it in. claude mcp add hey -- hey mcp writes to Claude Code's registry (~/.claude.json), and in my case it was scoped to the project directory I happened to be in. Cowork does not read that. What Cowork reaches is the Claude desktop app's local MCP servers, proxied to the cloud session over the desktop bridge. So the server has to be registered there instead:

~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json on macOS, alongside whatever other local servers you already have:

Two things that will bite otherwise:

• Use the absolute path to the binary. The desktop app is GUI-launched and does not inherit your shell's PATH, so a bare hey spawn-fails with no obvious reason — you just get a server that never comes up.
• Fully quit and reopen the app (Cmd-Q, not just closing the window).

After that the cloud session sees hey and its seven gateway tools. Confirmed with live reads: identity came back correct, and the Imbox returned real postings.

On the iOS half of your ask — this does get you most of the way. The Cowork session lives in the cloud and is linked to the Mac, so you can drive it from the phone and the hey tools still work. The caveat is that the Mac has to be awake with the desktop app running, since the bridge runs through it. So it is not a substitute for an internet-available MCP, and I would still want one for exactly the reason you opened this. But it does mean "read and triage my HEY from my phone" works now rather than later.

One gap worth knowing before you build on it: the MCP surface is a subset of the CLI, and per-thread seen is not in it — only mark_box_seen, which flattens the whole box. Filed as #404.
