1. Background Story – Why This Exists

Protagonist: Huan, writing a biography.

Starting point:

  • We (human + AI) co‑wrote a long, rich biography piece in Markdown, then published it as a blog post.
  • The content felt book-worthy immediately.

Next step: "Let’s make this a real book."

  • Goal: 6×9" print book (KDP-style), proper margins and bleed, nice typography, chapter hero images, and an overall professional feel.

  • Toolchain Huan used:

    • Source: Markdown blog post
    • Conversion: Pandoc → LaTeX (memoir class)
    • Template: custom print/template.tex
    • Build: make print-bookprint/output/book-print.pdf

What went right:

  • Geometry and margins defined (stock 6.25×9.25" with trims to 6×9", 0.125" bleed).
  • Type pairing: TeX Gyre Pagella (body) + Heros (sans), with clear heading hierarchy.
  • Dedicated \chapterhero{...} macro for chapter opener images.
  • Reproducible build pipeline; metadata wired.

What was painful:

  • Cover: full-bleed cover art still had white padding at top/right.

  • Hero images: chapter opener images were mostly off-page—only a tiny strip at the top visible.

    • Bleed/placement/shipout interaction in LaTeX was non-intuitive.
    • \ClearShipoutPictureBG didn’t behave as expected.
  • Lots of iteration just to:

    • Align hero image to the physical top.
    • Guarantee real full-bleed (no ghost padding).
    • Maintain a consistent white band below the hero before the chapter title.
  • Huan is not a LaTeX / publishing veteran. It felt like doing a PhD thesis layout from scratch just to print one book.

Key insight:

The hard part isn’t writing the book. The hard part is getting from “nice Markdown” to a press-ready PDF with professional layout, bleed, images, and typographic consistency.

  • Domain complexity: trim vs stock vs bleed, DPI, PDF/X, CMYK, hero vs inline figures, widows/orphans.
  • High cognitive overhead: they must think like a book designer + print technician, not an author.

2.2 Concrete Pain (Huan’s Experience)

Huan’s 24–48h struggle:

  • Wrote the content once (Markdown/blog).

  • Then spent dozens of hours:

    • Tuning LaTeX geometry.
    • Fighting shipout and full-bleed images.
    • Debugging why the cover and hero images showed white padding / partial visibility.
    • Adjusting spacing and typography for a single, consistent chapter-opener style.

All of this is repeat work that:

  • Could be generalized.
  • Could be automated.
  • Should be handled by an AI + deterministic layout pipeline instead of the human.

3. Our Proposed Solution – AI Book Publisher Protocol

3.1 One-Sentence Vision

An AI-orchestrated book layout system that takes arbitrary long-form content (Markdown, docs, blogs) and produces press-ready, beautiful PDFs (and EPUB) with minimal human effort.

3.2 Concept: "Book Publisher Protocol"

We define a protocol and pipeline where:

  1. Input:

    • Raw content: Markdown / DOCX / Notion / blog URLs.
    • A short design intent questionnaire (book type, vibe, trim size, print vs eBook, etc.).
  2. AI Layout Brain:

    • Parses content into a semantic book model: parts, chapters, sections, sidebars, figures.

6. Hackathon MVP – What We Actually Build

6.1 Hackathon-Scoped Goal

Deliver a working demo where a user can:

  1. Upload a Markdown file.

  2. Answer a short design questionnaire (trim size, vibe, chapter hero yes/no).

  3. Click “Build Book”.

  4. Download a KDP-ready 6×9" PDF with:

    • Basic front matter (title page, copyright).
    • TOC.
    • Chapter openers with hero images (generated if missing).
    • Consistent typography and margins.

6.2 Concrete Features for MVP

  • Input & Intent:

    • Simple web UI: file upload + ~5 questions (book type, trim size, font vibe, hero images on/off, image generation allowed?).
  • BOOK_SPEC generator (LLM agent):

    • Reads a sample of the content.

    • Generates BOOK_SPEC.yaml containing:

      • trim size (fix to 6×9" for v1),
      • margins & bleed (0.125"),
      • font pairing choice from a small curated list,
      • chapter opener rules,
      • basic heading hierarchy.
  • Layout template generator:

    • Takes BOOK_SPEC.yaml → emits template.tex using memoir or Typst.
    • Includes a \chapterhero macro for full-bleed top hero image with white band and chapter title below.
  • Image pipeline:

    • For each top-level heading (chapter):

      • If no image is associated, generate one via an image model using a consistent, simple prompt formula.
      • Save at appropriate resolution for 6×9" hero at 300 dpi.
  • Build and QA:

    • Call Pandoc + LaTeX in the backend to produce book-print.pdf.

    • Run a light QA:

      • Ensure page size is 6×9".
      • Sample first and one chapter opener page as PNG thumbnails.

  • The underlying engine (LaTeX, Typst, or anything else) can be chosen later.
  • A simple UI or CLI can wrap the entire flow so the user only uploads text and downloads a book.
